Part of keeping a dog looking good is maintaining the hair. You can cut your dog's hair every couple weeks or each summer, depending on how fast or long it grows. Cutting dog hair is not an easy task, but with plenty of practice and patience you can learn how to do it yourself and save some money at the same time.

      Take a grooming class. In these classes, instructors will explain the difference in the breeds and the angles used in cutting the hair depending on the breed. There are several grooming schools located throughout the country, including Basics and Beyond Grooming School in South Dakota and California School of Dog Grooming in San Marcos, California. Study the breeds to get a better understanding to how to cut dog hair.

      Watch instructional videos that will show you how to cut and what type of shears and blades to use. Familiarize yourself with the type of shears and blades needed for grooming various breeds. Different scissors are used depending on the type of hair and breed. For example, use thinning shears for cutting hair around the face and feet, especially for such breeds as cocker spaniels and bichons. Learn which blade is the right blade for the dog.

      Discuss techniques used with a professional groomer. Ask the professional groomer what steps you should take before bathing the dog, techniques used in brushing out and removing tangles, what shampoos to use depending on the skin type, and how to keep the dog still and calm while cutting hair.

      Gain insight by watching a professional cut dog hair in person. Ask several local groomers if they will allow you watch them cut dog hair. Watch at least two groomers to see the different styles of cutting as well. You will develop a style of your own with the more experience you get.
