Things You'll Need
- Diatomaceous earth
- Vaccum cleaner
- Pet shampoo
Instructions
Vacuum your house carefully and thoroughly. Make sure you vacuum furniture, mattresses and any other places where fleas can be hiding. Do this every two weeks so as to eliminate both the adult fleas and their eggs.
Bathe your dog or cat or other animals that might have brought the fleas home. Use a flea shampoo on your dog or cat and leave the shampoo on for at least five minutes to give the fleas time to drown. After bathing your companion animal, dry as usual and use a flea comb to search through his coat and drop any fleas you see in rubbing alcohol or a cup of water to which drops of soap have been added.
Apply diatomaceous earth to the carpets and to your pets. This is a natural substance that has fossilized algae remains. The hard shells of diatomaceous earth destroy the exoskeleton of the fleas, killing fleas immediately. The diatomaceous earth is completely healthy for humans, and is actually used in some food (like flour) to keep insects out. Make sure you use food grade diatomaceous earth and not swimming pool grade.
