How to Clean your English Bulldog's Face Wrinkles

Bulldogs are wonderful dogs but they do require special attention to the wrinkles on their face to keep them happy and healthy. Many bulldogs are also prone to tear stains. This is because of excessive tearing that keeps the wrinkles on the side of their faces wet. The wetness can be a breeding ground for yeast and bacteria. It is essential to keep the area dry, clean and free of bacteria. Please note that if you think your dog has a serious issue it should be checked by a vet.

Some bulldogs are more wrinkly than others.

Clean your bulldog's wrinkles daily. Use unscented baby wipes to wipe the facial wrinkles. Don't press hard or wipe back and forth. You can irritate the skin. Wipe inside the wrinkles in one direction. First start at the corner of the eyes and move down toward the bottom of the jowl. Be careful not to touch or irritate the eyes.

Lift the big wrinkle above the nose and wipe underneath in one direction. Begin at the top and swipe in a downward direction. Do this several times, using a fresh wipe (or a different part of the wipe) each time. Dirt and bacteria can accumulate in this area.

Check the wrinkles on the side of the face for tear stains and irritation because of excessive tearing. Many bulldogs are prone to this excessive tearing problem. If you notice a lot of redness, moisture and an odor, your dog may have a yeast infection. Seek veterinary advice if you are unsure of your dog's condition or if it is severe. If yeast is a problem, try putting a little Monistat on your finger and putting it in the wrinkle after you have cleaned and dried the area. This usually clears the problem almost overnight. You can use a name brand or the generic. If you are unsure of the product ask the pharmacist.

Clean your bulldog's tail area where wrinkles are as well. Because of their unique shape, bulldogs can't clean their hind area themselves. Use a clean baby wipe to clean around your dog's tail and anal area. Make sure you get in the tail crevices close to their body. This is an area that can get dirty and be a breeding ground for infection. Your dog will appreciate your cleaning this area for him.
