How to Make Dog Toothpaste

If your dog has bad breath, you should examine his teeth. Sometimes bad breath is a sign of a dental problem, which may warrant a trip to the vet. You might also want to increase the dry food in his diet, which is good for removing tartar (which can produce bad odor). Diet is also a possible culprit, so a change might help.

If those techniques don't improve your dog's bad breath, you can also brush your canine's teeth! Below is a natural recipe for dog toothpaste, and tips on how to apply it.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking Soda
  • Essential Oils (2 drops peppermint or clove or aniseed work best)
  • Cotton ball or dog toothbrush

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 2 tablespoons baking soda (bicarbonate soda), and 2 drops of edible essential oil (like clove or aniseed or peppermint).

    • 2

Take a cotton ball (sometimes called cotton wool) and wet it with water. Then dip the cotton ball into the toothpaste mixture above.

You could use a toothbrush, but this can hurt the dog's gums. If you choose to use one anyway, pick a soft bristled toothbrush, or look for a dog toothbrush at the pet store.

    • 3

Take the cotton ball and rub it along the dog's teeth and gums. This assumes your pet is comfortable and allows you to do this! After you've brushed his teeth, allow the dog to drink some water.

If your dog refuses, you can add a bit of the mix to his food. It's not as effective, but better than nothing.

Repeat this procedure daily. If symptoms persist, take the dog to the vet to rule out digestive problems or more serious conditions.
