Home Remedy I
-
Mix equal parts of plain Milk of Magnesia and hydrogen peroxide. Add corn starch to make it the consistency of a paste. Apply the paste and rub into the stained area, avoiding the eyes, and allow it to dry for four hours. Gently remove the dried paste with a wet cloth; after the area is completely dry, apply a light coat of diaper rash ointment. This should be repeated for three consecutive days with a day or two break before beginning another three-day application if it is necessary.
Home Remedy II
-
According to Bulldogsworld, you can make a paste of 2 tsp. of corn flour with boiling water, adding just a few drops at a time. Mix in one drop of plain bleach and allow the paste to cool. Carefully apply it to the stained area, avoiding the eyes. After one hour, gently remove it with warm water. With a cotton ball, lightly apply hydrogen peroxide and allow it to dry. This should be repeated every other day for a two week period.
Over-the-Counter
-
There are many tear stain removal and prevention products available such as Angels' Eyes, Angels' Glow, Four Paws and Eye Envy Stain Removal. You might want to find a product that conditions your dog's fur as well as removing stains. Since some dogs may not be very cooperative when you are working around their eyes, a product that is effective, easy to use and works quickly will be easier on both you and your dog. No matter which product you choose, you should be extremely careful not to get it in your dog's eyes.
Infections
-
Your dog's moist hair is an ideal location for the growth of bacteria or yeast. Some yeast infections give off an odor. Your dog's tear ducts may also become infected which causes additional tearing and staining. If your dog has a bacterial or yeast infection you should see your veterinarian for treatment. In some cases, eliminating the infection can also eliminate the stains.
Warning
-
Before trying a home remedy for tear stains or purchasing an over-the-counter product, consult your veterinarian to make sure that the tearing is not caused by an underlying medical condition. Your veterinarian may recommend a specific type of treatment to remove the stains. Whether a home remedy or other product, be especially carefully around your dog's eyes. Be sure that the solution is not soaked into the fur directly under dog's eyelids, where it can more easily get into its eyes.
