Dog Bandana Instructions

Dog bandanas are a form of expression for both a dog and his owner. A bandana is easy to make and can be used for a festive occasion, following a theme like July 4 or Christmas, or used for just any day of the week.
  1. Supplies

    • To make a dog bandana, have fabric or a bandana, measuring tape or string, scissors, Velcro and fabric glue.

    Making Your Bandana

    • The standard bandana is a 22-inch square, and you can create a dog bandana from a store-bought bandana or from the fabric of your choice. The beauty of making your own is that is can be custom made to fit your dog. If you have a large breed, a standard bandana will probably do just fine. Otherwise, measure your dog's neck with either a measuring tape or a piece of string. Add 2 inches to the measurement to account for a hem and a little room so you don't choke your dog. This measurement will be the size of the diagonal line that will divide your square in half, creating a triangle shape.

To determine the measurement of the sides of your square, you can use simple geometry (the Pythagorean Theorem) or make simple adjustments later when placing the bandana on your dog. Cut the square with the dimensions of your measurement and fold over approximately 1/8 inch along each side. Tack each fold down with fabric glue--this will create a hem and avoid fraying. When your edges are dry, fold the bandana in half with the hem edge on the inside so you create a triangle. On one triangle point, along the folded edge side of the bandana, stick a piece of Velcro approximately 2 inches long and on the other point along the folded edge, stick another 2-inch piece of Velcro. Your bandana is now ready for your dog.

    Putting the Dog Bandana On

    • The Velcro will enable you to put the bandana on your dog and remove it easily. It's safer to have Velcro as opposed to tying it on your dog for easy release and to avoid choking. The Velcro also adds some flexibility in terms of sizing to your dog's neck. Enjoy the accessory, and make a variety of them to add a little zing to your favorite pet.
