Skunk Smell Removal for Dogs

Skunks are notorious for the potent and noxious odor they create. The skunks' anal glands produce a sulfur-containing chemical that they spray when threatened. Dogs are often the target of this spray, and there are a few methods to remove the odor.
  1. Popular Solution

    • Mix a solution of 1/4 cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1 to 2 tsp. of dish soap. After washing the dog, rub this solution into its coat.

    Caution

    • Do not store the above solution in a closed container, as the container can burst due to the pressure that the ingredients can cause.

    Tomato Juice Bath

    • Another method involves giving the dog a bath in either tomato juice or mouthwash, then shampooing the dog.

    Vinegar and Water

    • Some people recommend soaking the dog in either a white vinegar or an apple cider vinegar bath.
