How to Use an Electric Shaver to Cut Mats Out of Dogs

Regular grooming will usually prevent serious mats in your dog's fur, but in cases where you have to deal with mats, it is fairly easy to use an electric shaver. The best shavers to use for this are dog-specific, but if you don't have one, a regular shaver will work with a bit more effort. Unfortunately, this method isn't pretty; it will completely cut out the chunk of matted fur.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe your dog and apply conditioner to help loosen the mats. After the bath, towel dry your dog and give him time to dry completely.

    • 2

Turn on the shaver and set it in a safe place near your dog. (This gives her a chance to get used to the sound.)

    • 3

Comb out the mats as much as possible. Even if you can just loosen them, it will help.

    • 4

Grasp the mat in your hand and examine the skin. Look for any spots where the skin is being pulled tighter.

    • 5

Pick up the shavers and begin shaving, starting at one edge of the mat, about a half an inch from the skin. If you can see the skin clearly, you can clip a bit closer to the skin. Use short flicks of the shaver; do not try to cut all the way through all at once. Check and clean the blade often.

Comb out the area. Be gentle! Your dog's skin is probably very sensitized at this point. If you still can't comb through, massage a small amount of conditioner into the fur and try again. Repeat the clipping only if you are sure you can avoid your dog's skin.
