How to Use Professional Dog Clippers

Grooming dogs can be challenging, especially with the different varieties of breeds and coat types. It is no longer a matter of simply brushing or bathing your pooch and enjoying his company. If you have a poodle, a Shar-Pei or another specialty breed with grooming requirements, the care of your dog's coat can be a significant factor not only in his looks, but also in his health. With a little practice and some care, you can save yourself money by doing your own clip job at home.

  1. How to Use Professional Dog Clippers

    • 1

Buy the right kind of clippers. You do not want large animal or livestock clippers. You need clippers specified for pet use. There are many name brands available, with Oster and Wahl being among the best.

    • 2

Bathe and dry your dog's coat. His hair must be clean and dry before you clip his coat.

    • 3

Accustom your dog to the sound and the feel of the clippers. This is important. Some dogs can become aggressive when they are frightened, and this can become dangerous. Use your voice and hands to calm and reassure your dog as you introduce him to the clippers.

    • 4

Holding the blade at a 45-degree angle, press the cutting edge down into the fur to the desired depth and make a clean, smooth, downward stroke. Cut with the hair growth, not against it.

    • 5

For thick and matted fur, use shorter strokes and clean the blades after each cut. Any dirt or debris will clog your clipper blades and will need to be cleaned out to avoid burning out the motor.

    • 6

Never clip with the blade pointing directly down toward your dog's skin, as this could cut him. Brush all the loose hair from your dog. Rewash, if necessary.

    • 7

Clean and oil your blade once you have completed your clip job.
