How to Bathe Newborn Puppies

Just like any newborn animal, newborn puppies require a lot of attention and care. Usually, the mother dog will wash the puppies herself, But if she's unwilling, human intervention is necessary. Because newborn puppies can't regulate their body temperature, immersing them in a bath--no matter how warm--can give them a chill. So a damp washcloth will work just fine.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a soft washcloth in warm water. No shampoo is necessary at this point; a puppy's skin is very sensitive.

    • 2

Gently wash the puppies. Clean off any leftover residue from the amniotic sac.

    • 3

Dry the puppy. Rub off any excess moisture with a clean towel. Use a hair dryer on the lowest setting if necessary.

    • 4

Keep the puppy warm. Place the puppy next to her mother and siblings for body heat. Use a heating pad or heat lamp to provide extra warmth for the dogs.
