Check to see what your dog is eating; the main reason for a dog's dry skin and dandruff is diet. Not all dog foods are created equal; some are good and many are really bad for your dog. Get your dog on a good diet and this will greatly help your dog's skin and coat (see Resources below for an excellent brand of dog food).

Once your dog is on a good diet you can use some simple, easy-to-find products that will also help. The first one that I use a lot is apple cider vinegar. Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar is the best. Pour the vinegar onto your dog's coat and work it into his skin. Rub vigorously and let it sit on your dog's coat for about 10 minutes.

After waiting 10 minutes you can rinse and shampoo your dog. If your dog has severe dandruff, repeat this again the next day. Apple cider vinegar is great for dandruff; it also works great on people. The only drawback to using ACV is that your dog may smell like a pickle for a few days.

Coconut oil is also effective for dogs that have dry skin and dandruff and is great for skin problems. Coconut oil is left in for a little longer than ACV. Coconut oil does not come in liquid form. By putting some in a bowl and placing it in some warm water it will become liquid.

Once it is in liquid form you can rub it into your dog's coat. Coconut oil can stay in longer. After an hour or two you can rinse it off and give your dog a shampoo.
