How To Use Puppy Nail Clippers

Do you hear the "clickety-click" of your dog's nails on your hardwood floors? If you do, it means that your dog's nails are ready to be cut. Most dogs need their toenails trimmed every 3 to4 weeks. If you wait much longer than that, your dog can develop ingrown toenails. In general, your dog will be much more comfortable with shorter nails. Groomers often cut dog's nails, but there's no reason you can't do it yourself.

      Curl your arm around the dog's trunk and hold the dog securely against your chest with your left arm.

      Put your left hand under the dog's paw and lift it slightly.

      Place your left thumb on top of the nail that you want to cut.

      Slide the nail clippers over the dog's nail. Position them so that they are below the quick. The quick is the dark spot near the center of the nail. Cutting above the quick will cause the nail to bleed.

      Use the clippers to cut the nail. Continue with the remaining nails on that paw, and then move on to the other three paws.

      Praise the dog after you finish the nail-cutting session; this will give the dog a positive association with nail cutting.
