How to Make a Shirt for a Great Dane Out of Old Sweat Shirts

Instead of going to the doggie boutique to purchase a sweatshirt to keep your great dane comfy on chilly walks, save a few dollars and make it yourself out of one of your old sweatshirts.

  • An old sweatshirt -- size large should do
  • Measuring tape
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine

  1. Measure, Cut, Sew and Go

      Measure your dog from behind his collar to the middle of his back. This is the length of the sweater. Measure your dog from his elbow, across his back to the other elbow. This is the width of the sweater.

      Cut the sweatshirt to match the measurements. Try the sweatshirt on over your dog's head so you can decide if the neck is too tight. If it is, trim the neck in about an inch and hem the raw edge.

      You may remove the cuffs from the sleeves and sew them back on so that the dog shirt hangs just below the elbow line. Remove the cuff from the bottom of the sweatshirt and sew it to the cut edge easing in some of the fullness so the finished product won't hang too far down under the dog.
