How to Open a Pet-Sitting Business

Pet sitting is a perfect business for those who love animals. Most households have at least one pet and when these families go on vacation, those pets will need to be taken care of. Though more difficult than some perceive, pet sitting can be lucrative, fun and rewarding.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your neighbors and friends if you can pet-sit for them. You can then get referrals from your friends and neighbors for other jobs, and you can tell potential clients that you have experience.

    • 2

Decide what services you're willing to provide. Pet-sitting can include dog walking, overnight stays, animal feedings, playing with dogs at the park, grooming cats or giving medicine.

    • 3

Give your business a name. Pick a creative name that's easy to remember and not in use in your area. Use words related to pet-sitting in your name.

    • 4

Advertise your pet-sitting business. Put up fliers on park bulletin boards, place an ad in the newspaper, post an ad on Internet sites such as Craigslist, or create your own website. Hand out business cards to people you see walking their dogs.

    • 5

Write up a detailed contract of what services and charges your pet sitting encompasses, and leave room for such things as dates for pet sitting, emergency contacts, health and veterinary information.

    • 6

When you meet a client, write up the contract to include their information, have her sign it when all of the needs have been addressed, and give the client a copy. Make sure to do everything that you have agreed to do, because satisfied customers will provide additional business.
