Take your Yorkie to the veterinarian to find out about any skin allergies. Many toy breeds, including Yorkies, have very sensitive skin. They may have allergic tendencies or skin conditions that could be exacerbated by certain types of shampoo. Your vet can indicate any ingredients to avoid before you begin bathing your Yorkie.
Select a hairstyle for your Yorkie. Some people like to let Yorkies' hair grow very long so that it hangs in a silky curtain or can be tied up in a topknot with a bow. Others like to keep a "puppy cut," which means that the hair is trimmed close to the body and face and only a little longer and silkier on top. Your dog's haircut will determine what type of shampoo will be best.
Narrow your shampoo choices. Pick three to five shampoos that you think will be best for your wants and needs. Consider how easy it is to detangle the coat; whether the shampoo will make the coat silky, shiny or give more volume; and if your dog in particular has flea problems, which can be alleviated with some shampoos. In addition, you should factor in smell.
Consider salon-style human products. Many mid-grade to high-end human hair products are actually less expensive than the canine version, and do the same job. If your dog has dry skin, then this will probably not be a workable solution for you. However, some people find that human hair products work just as well as dog ones.
Read the ingredients on the shampoos. A good Yorkie shampoo will have a relatively high pH, lots of fatty acids and vitamins like E and B5. Avoid excessive fragrances and strange colors. If you like natural ingredients, then look for aloe vera, tea-tree oil and citrus extracts.
How to Choose Shampoo for a Yorkie
A Yorkie, or Yorkshire Terrier, is a toy breed that is smart, stubborn and irresistibly adorable. Adult Yorkies tend to be anywhere from 6 to 12 lbs. and can be groomed in a variety of ways. The shampoo you bathe your Yorkie with can be as important as the grooming products you use to make his coat shine. Be very particular when selecting a shampoo that will be perfect for your special dog.
