Call your local salons to see if they participate in the Locks of Love program. Many hair salons will offer a discounted or free haircut if you are choosing to donate your hair to Locks of Love. Donating your hair to Locks of Love through a salon is the easiest way to make the donation.
Finding the right hair salon to make your donation will make the process easier. The hair salon will make sure your hair is clean, the proper length, cut the correct way for the donation and mailed to the correct Locks of Love office.
Make your appointment with the hair salon. Once you arrive at your appointment, the stylist will measure your hair to make sure you can make a donation to Locks of Love. The program requires a minimum donation of 8 in. of clean, healthy hair. The hair stylist will make sure your hair is within the guidelines for a donation.
Washing and cutting your hair comes next. The hair stylist will wash your hair to ensure Locks of Love receives a clean donation. After they wash your hair, they will put it into a low ponytail, and help you determine how short you'd like to cut your hair. Once you agree on a length, the ponytail will be cut off just above the rubber band.
Styling your new short hair is next. Since this will be a whole new style for you, it might be a good idea to take a few pictures along with you to give the hair stylist a few ideas of how you might like your hair. The hair stylist will finish your new style, and then prepare your old hair for the donation to Locks of Love.
Bagging up the ponytail, with rubber band still in place, comes next. The hair salon will also fill out the appropriate paperwork and mail your donation for you.
Donating to Locks of Love helps children who genetically cannot grow hair, are healing from scalp burns or are living with the side effects from cancer treatments that have made them lose their hair.
