How to Make a Leather Jacket for a Dog

These days there seems to be no limit on what we do for our pets or how much we spend. It's no surprise to see a dog sporting a cute little sweater with matching shoes and hat. Leather jackets are also popular for pooches and with a little sewing, you, too can have your dog dress in style.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure around the largest part of your dog's chest. Round up to the nearest inch, if your measurement falls between two numbers.

    • 2

Find a pattern suitable for a dog sweater or jacket. One option is to visit the Free Resizable Dog Clothing Pattern website. There is a printable online version that is resizable to fit your needs. Make sure your paper is big enough to print the full pattern.

    • 3

Cut out the pattern from your paper. Overlay the paper pattern onto the leather. Fold your leather in half lengthwise and cut around the fold so that when you unfold it, it's symmetrical. Repeat your cutout with a second piece of leather.

    • 4

Place the two leather pieces on top of one another with the backs of the leather facing out; in other words, sew the pieces together inside out. Use a 1/4 inch seam. Leave the top two straight sides and the bottom two straight edges open.

    • 5

Clip the inside corners of the seams at the narrowest part of the jacket and also clip around the neckline.

    • 6

Pull the leather jacket through one of the openings so that the shiny leather is now on the outside. Tuck and fold the edges of your openings and sew them with the same 1/4 inch seam.

    • 7

Attach the soft velcro to the two inside left flaps. Turn the jacket over and attach the rough velcro to the two outside right flaps. Try your leather jacket on your pooch.
