How to Groom a Pomeranian

The pomeranian is a small toy breed of Spitz descent. Their varied-colored coats are profuse and puffy, adding to their charm. Their outercoat is harsh, guard hair for their dense undercoat. While some prefer a trimmed dog, most pomeranian owners prefer the puffed up look, and in the show ring this is a must.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush and comb your pomeranian at least twice a week using a slicker brush and metal comb to remove an abundance of thick, shedding hair from his wooly undercoat and harsh outercoat.

    • 2

Use a matting comb to work out mats in your dog's coat. Both coats are extremely dense and mat frequently. Be sure to dampen her hair before de-matting to help ease the process for you and your dog.

    • 3

Trim excess hair around your pomeranian's anal area, on his hocks, around his ears and anywhere else you notice stray hairs. Remember to retain his puffy-haired appearance.

    • 4

Clip hair on her paws and even out the hair on the bottom of her feet with her pads. Trim her nails at least once a month with small dog or cat nail clippers.

    • 5

Bathe your pomeranian every 3 to 4 weeks or as needed if dirty. Use a high quality moisturizing shampoo, recommended by your vet, breeder or pet store. Use care not to get water in his ears.

    • 6

Blow your dog dry. While blowing, brush her coat against the grain, then with the grain to add volume. Once dry, brush a final time with an upward motion to achieve the pomeranian's characteristic puffed up look.

    • 7

Brush your dog's teeth daily with an enzymatic toothpaste, which fights bacteria. Pomeranians are highly prone to tooth decay and tooth loss, so dental care is a must.
