Trimming Toy Pomeranians

Without proper grooming, the hair on a toy Pomeranian mats together, forming heavy and unsanitary clumps. In some cases, the excess hair amounts to three times the dog's body weight, resulting in discomfort. By properly trimming toy Pomeranians, dog owners maintain their health and style. Toy Pomeranians have a signature look dependent on hair trimming techniques. Spend some quality time with your pet Pomeranian, trimming its fur into a nice, neat style.
  1. Preparation

    • Washing and drying toy Pomeranians prepares them for a trim. Use a dog shampoo to thoroughly wash your Pomeranian while avoiding any water contact with his ears, nose and eyes. After the bath, use absorbent towels to soak up most of the water from his fur and blow it completely dry with a hair dryer. While drying the hair, use your other hand to brush the fur upward toward his head, preparing it for trimming.

    Ears and Face

    • Sculpting the ears and face of a toy Pomeranian takes a lot of finesse and caution. Holding the ears between your thumb and forefinger will allow you to keep them still and avoid cutting them during a trim. While holding the tip of the ear, cut the excess hair above that point horizontally. Shape the ear by making a second cut at a slightly tilted angle. Brushing the fur of a Pomeranian's head will make it easier for you to trim. Without cutting the hair too short, form a circular shape by trimming around his whole face.

    Chest and Tails

    • Continue the circular pattern while trimming fur from the body of your toy Pomeranian. After brushing his chest hair upward, angle your scissors toward his knee, start cutting one-third of the way up his leg, and cut the fur into the shape of a semi-circle from the front to back leg. Trim up any excess fur around the base of his tail and lift it to clean up the hair underneath. You will then twirl the end of the tail, hold it straight up and trim a little off the top.

    Legs and Feet

    • Before trimming the fur on a Pomeranian's legs, brush it up and outward to get it away from his skin. Hold the scissors downward and trim the excess leg hair with vertical cuts. You will need to trim away any messy hairs from the tops and bottoms of your Pomeranian's feet while holding them firmly in place. Turn your dog onto his back and hold his ankle to trim excess hair from his feet bottoms.
