How to Lighten Saliva Stains on Dog Hair

Saliva stains on dog fur usually occur around the dog's mouth or on the beard and may be caused by a number of things, including oxidation of saliva, coloring in the dog's food, or a yeast infection known as Ptyrosporin, according to master groomer Kathy Salzberg. Washing the dog's face with a damp cloth once a day can help prevent these stains, but if your best friend is already looking a little brown around the mouth there are steps you can take to get him back into show-dog shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim the stained hair with a pair of grooming scissors to get rid of the deepest stained strands. Keeping the dog's hair shorter will also help prevent future stains.

    • 2

Wipe the stained fur with an unscented baby wipe or a wipe specifically made for pets. Do this on a regular basis to prevent stains.

    • 3

Apply a fur stain remover specifically made for pet fur available at your local pet store. Follow the manufacturer's directions for application as all brands will vary.
