How to Make a Dog Scarf to Go With a Dog Collar

Dressing up your dog for the holidays, family photos, a trip to the store or just to hang around the house is a fun way to make your pooch feel like part of the family. Making a scarf to go with your dog's favorite collar adds flare to its appearance. Opt for colors or prints that are seasonal or holiday-themed, to give your family dog its own sense of style.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray starch on the fabric and iron. This allows your fabric to lie flat and gets rid of any wrinkles that may cause your scarf to look smaller.

    • 2

Measure the length of your dog's collar. Put two dots on the bottom of the scarf fabric to mark the length and connect them with your ruler.

    • 3

Measure the width of the buckle and double it. If the buckle is 2 inches wide, account for 4 inches of material. Starting at the edge of the line, make a dot four inches up and connect it with the ruler. Repeat on the other side. You're forming a long three-sided rectangle at this point.

    • 4

Find the middle of the length line and measure out two-thirds of the length to form your triangle. For example, if your scarf is 12 inches long, make a dot eight inches out from the center. Connect the edges of the 4-inch line to the new center dot. You should have what appears to be a triangle with a long rectangle shape at the base and has five sides.

    • 5

Cut the scarf fabric with your scissors. It's always better to cut outside the line to ensure that you have enough material.

    • 6

Fold in one edge with one fold to create approximately a 1/2-inch hem. Spray the crease with starch and iron to set the crease. Fold over one more time to create your hem. Repeat this step on all sides, except for the bottom length side.

    • 7

Sew the four hems on your sewing machine. Use a straight single stitch seam to seal in the edges.

    • 8

Fold the length side over one time to form a 1/2-inch seam. Spray crease with starch and iron. This side is different from the others because you're forming a type of sleeve to go with the collar. Carefully fold this side over using the width of the buckle measurement. For example, for a 2-inch wide buckle, you need 4 inches of material, which creates about a 2-inch fold.

    • 9

Spray the sleeve area with starch and iron to set your crease. Sew along the bottom of the fold to create the sleeve.

    • 10

Slide the collar into the sleeve. This gives you a scarf that goes with your dog̵7;s collar that doesn̵7;t bunch up or wind up at the base of its neck.
