How to Groom and Clip a Pomeranian

Grooming and clipping a Pomeranian can seem like a daunting task due to its dense undercoat and long, thick outer coat. Grooming should be done regularly to avoid matting and knots that will cause discomfort to your dog. Clipping your Pomeranian will make the grooming process easier as well as make your Pom look tidier. If you have a Pomeranian puppy, begin the grooming ritual now so your puppy is accustomed to regular grooming. As an added bonus, grooming your Pom will help you and your dog form a special bond.

Instructions

    • 1

Shampoo your Pomeranian. Be careful not to get any water or shampoo in the dog's eyes, ears or mouth. You may choose to place cotton balls in the dog's ears. Rinse thoroughly, and apply conditioner if desired. Rinse the conditioner thoroughly.

Dry your Pomeranian with a fluffy towel. Finish drying your dog with a hair dryer on a low setting. As you are drying the Pomeranian, brush the dog's coat. Brush against the direction of the fur toward the dog's head, to dry the undercoat and remove any knots or matting.

Restrain your dog with a leash or place on a grooming table if needed. Begin clipping your Pom by trimming the ears. Hold the ear with your thumb pressed against the tip of the ear to avoid cutting or clipping the ear, and trim the excess hair off. Step back and inspect your work in small amounts, so you do not clip too much hair off.

Use thinning shears for a more natural look.

Clip or trim the excess hair around the head and neck to form a circular shape. Start by cutting less than 1 inch of fur in a section. Inspect your work to see if you would like to clip the fur shorter. If you are not confident about your clipping or trimming skills, use thinning shears for a more natural look that will also hide mistakes.

Brush the fur on the chest upward toward the face of the Pomeranian. Clip it at an angle towards the knee of the dog. This continues the circular shape you began clipping on the head and neck of the dog.

    • 6

Clip the fur on the belly of your Pomeranian in a semi circular shape, with the shortest clipped fur being in the center of the Pom's belly. Step back and look at how short you are clipping before you decide to clip off any additional fur.

Clip a small amount of fur at a time from the base of the tail so it is neat and stays clean. Twist the end of the tail together, and clip a straight line at the point where you think it will look tidy. Typically, clipping 1 or 2 inches from the end of the tail will be sufficient.
