How to Keep a Dog's Leg Dry in Braces

Dog leg braces -- also known as splints -- are a stabilizing tool used when a dog has sustained a leg or knee injury, or suffers arthritis that affects his ability to stand and use a leg or joint. While many of the braces are waterproof to prevent rusting, a dog's leg can still get wet inside the brace when he urinates or goes outside in rain or snow. However, you can take a few simple steps to prevent moisture from slipping under the brace.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand towel or washcloth
  • Plastic bag
  • Duct tape

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the hand towel or washcloth around the top of the brace. Tuck the cloth's edges inside the brace to prevent moisture seeping in and sliding under the brace. If cloth toweling is not available, use a wad of paper towels to form a barrier.

    • 2

Slip the plastic bag over the bottom of the dog's foot, sliding it over the brace and the toweling at the top of the brace. The bag should be sufficient for the dog's size; smaller dogs can use a smaller garbage bag or bread sack. Larger dogs will need a larger bag, such as a garbage bag. Heavier plastic is preferred to avoid tearing when the dog walks.

Pull the top of the bag closed above the toweling and gently twist it closed. Make sure it is not so tight as to be uncomfortable on the dog's leg. Secure the top closed with the duct tape; avoid touching the tape to the dog's fur.

Cut the duct tape off the bag when the dog returns inside; cut slowly to avoid injuring the dog if he moves suddenly. Discard the bag and tape and use fresh materials when the cover is required again. Pull the toweling out of the top of the brace and inspect for moisture. If the toweling is wet, remove the brace and dry the dog's leg gently. Towel off the brace before putting it back on the dog's leg.
