Garments to Prevent Breeding in Dogs

If you don't want your female dog in heat breed, the most effective way to prevent it is the barrier method. Accomplish this by putting her into a garment that makes her vulva inaccessible to males. This garment can be custom-made and as pretty as you like -- she couldn't care less how it looks, as long as it's comfortable. It should also be easy to put on and remove quickly. Just be sure to remember to remove the garment when you take her out to go potty.
  1. Panties

    • You can buy decorative dog full panties and even thongs in colors and prints with lace, buttons and bows, but be sure they are made of reasonably strong fabric and are washable and reusable. They should also have a pocket to hold an absorbent pad; these can be special ones for dogs, but you can also use sanitary pads made for women that you can trim to fit the panty.

    Underwear

    • If you're into practical rather than decorative and have a medium to large dog, buy cheap boy's underwear, safety-pin a pad into the crotch (pins on the outside, please), put them on with the fly on her back and bring her tail out through it. Make sure the waist of any garment is snug but not tight around her belly; make adjustments by sewing or pinning with diaper pins. Accommodate tiny dogs by cutting leg and tail holes in the foot of a cotton sock.

    Diapers

    • Some dog owners swear by disposable baby diapers with stretchy sides and secured by tape tabs. Others find them too bulky, and some dogs find them too hot and/or too confining. Also, cutting a hole for her tail can be a bear!

    Side Effects

    • The biggest secondary benefit of dog panties is that you won't have to follow your girl around with a mop or scrub stains off the sofa. The diaper or the pad inside it will absorb her discharge, as well as help fend off ardent suitors. Another plus is that panties on a walk serve as a visible notice to owners of intact males to be extra careful about controlling them.
