Instructions
Ask your veterinarian about the nutritional needs of your dogs and then purchase food accordingly, reading labels carefully to ensure the food contains the proper balance of vitamins, protein and carbohydrates. Don't assume that the most expensive dog food is automatically the best food for your dog.
Supplement your dog's diet with healthy oils, such as Omega-3 oil. You can also use olive oil, flaxseed oil or fish oil. These help keep the coat shiny, and are especially useful if your dog has dry, itchy skin. Talk to your veterinarian about the specific amount to give your dog.
Shampoo your dog regularly, using products formulated specifically for dogs. Don't bathe your dog too often, as it dries out the skin and coat. There is no set rule regarding frequency of bathing, but for most dogs, once every week is sufficient.
Rinse the shampoo completely, because soap allowed to remain in the dog's coat leaves a residue that causes your dog's coat to look dull, and may cause itching.
Apply a conditioner, especially if your dog's coat tends to become matted or tangled. Some brands are even formulated to add extra shine.
Brush your dog at least once or twice a week, to remove dry skin and loose fur. Brushing also distributes the natural oils, and is the best way to ensure that your dog's coat remains sleek and shiny.
