How to Care for a Minor Cut on a Dog

Anytime a dog is injured, it is quite distressing for the owner. However, this is the time to remain calm and provide the dog with the care it needs depending on the situation. If your dog is cut, determine if the cut is deep or if there is a puncture wound. A deep cut or puncture requires treatment from a veterinarian. You can treat minor cuts at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold a sterile gauze pack to the cut with pressure. Apply pressure on the cut for a minimum of five minutes, longer if the bleeding has not subsided.

    • 2

Clip the hair away from the edges of the cut.

    • 3

Wash the cut with warm water and soap. You may also use hydrogen peroxide.

    • 4

Blot-dry the cut with sterile gauze pads; do not rub.

    • 5

Apply an antibiotic cream or ointment to the cut. Dr. Chris Pinney, DVM, recommends using a triple antibiotic product three times a day for five to seven days. Dr. Pinney also advises to only bandage the cut if your dog is licking or chewing at the cut.

Check the cut daily when you apply the antibiotic; look for redness, pus or pain. These are signs of a possible infecton, and your dog should be seen by a veterinarian.
