Fleas, Ticks & Other Parasites
-
Fleas, mites and ticks cause yellow Labradors to lick, chew and scratch itself. Ticks are usually easy to spot, but fleas can be hard to find because they're smaller, and mites are microscopic. Dogs tend to attract these parasites when outside in grass.
Allergies
-
Allergies are another common reason that yellow Labradors and other dogs scratch themselves. These can be caused by environmental triggers such as pollen or mold, or by reactions to certain foods. Some substances, such as soaps, can cause dogs to develop dermatitis, an irritation of the skin.
Quick Relief
-
One of the most immediate temporary remedies is to run a bath with cool water and add substances such as baking soda or Epsom salts. Put the dog in the solution and let it soak for about 10 minutes. Pat the dog dry with a towel. Rubbing the dog dry, or using a hair dryer with the heat, on might make it itch again. This bath should alleviate the itching for a few hours or a few days.
Solutions & Prevention
-
Several methods exist for ridding your yellow Lab of parasites. These include topical medications and chewable tablets. Ask your vet for recommendations.
If fleas are causing the scratching, vacuum your carpet thoroughly and regularly, and wash any beds or blankets used by your dog. This will help eliminate fleas and their eggs and decrease the chances of reinfestation. Treat other pets in the house too, as they also could carry fleas.
If food allergies seem to be the cause, ask your vet for diet tips. You might need to remove some of the Labrador's regular foods. Beef and wheat are common triggers for food allergies. Topical and ingestible medications are also available for skin allergies.
