How to Hydrate a Dog's Skin

Dry skin can affect a dog just as it can affect a human being. If your dog has persistent dry skin, contact a veterinarian right away, because the problem may indicate a severe allergy or a form of canine dermatitis. If your dog scratches, itches, sheds or experiences rashes as a result of occasional dry skin, you can usually remedy the problem at home without the need for medication.

Feed your dog a high-quality diet. The type of food that you feed your dog has a major impact on the skin and coat. For best results, feed your dog a meat-based, commercially-prepared diet high in protein.

Bathe your dog. When choosing a dog shampoo, look for oatmeal or benzoyl peroxide among the ingredients. Also look for ̶0;hypoallergenic̶1; on the label, since some dry skin can signify an allergy.

    • 3

Run a humidifier. If the air in your home is extremely dry, it can contribute to dry skin. On dry days, turn on the humidifier to moisten the air. The relative humidity inside the home should always be higher than 30 percent (but lower than 50 percent). Most humidifiers contain a built-in humidistat, which automatically measures the humidity in the home.

Rub liquid aloe vera over your dog's skin. Aloe vera naturally protects and hydrates skin, and even functions as a natural remedy for dermatitis. To promote healthy skin at all times, add a few drops of aloe vera to your dog's water as well.

Apply a commercial moisturizer. Some pet supply stores carry spray and liquid pet moisturizers that you can apply directly to your dog's skin for hydration. Look for moisturizers that contain oatmeal or aloe vera among the ingredients.
