How to Apply Olive Oil in a Dog's Ear

Dogs, especially ones with floppy ears, are prone to ear infections. Moisture, dirt and even pests, such as ear mites, all conspire against your pet's ear canals. Although there are many commercial ear treatments available, natural ones can work just as well and be a healthier alternative for your dog. Using olive oil to clean your dog's ears of infections and pests and prevent ear infections is a natural way to care for your dog's ears. Application can be done with a cotton swab or your fingers.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a small bottle of olive oil and remove the pour insert, if there is one.

    • 2

Slice two garlic cloves in half and add to the olive oil. Replace the lid. Let the garlic sit in the olive oil bottle out of direct sunlight for about a week. Shake the bottle periodically.

    • 3

Strain the garlic from the olive oil with a mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Add the olive oil back to the bottle using a funnel or put it in a sealed container.

    • 4

Dip a cotton swab in the garlic oil and place some inside your dog's ear. Massage the oil in with the swab or your fingers. Continue applying oil until any darkened discharge has dissolved. Wipe with a paper towel and reapply a small amount of olive oil. Repeat for the other ear.
