How to Help Dogs Destress

Dogs get stressed out just as humans do. Stress can be caused by separation anxiety, a new environment or the arrival of a new baby. Canine stress is sometimes expressed through negative or destructive behavior. Dogs can chew furnishings or flooring when they are stressed. And stressed out dogs sometimes show their mental state by having accidents when they are otherwise house trained. The stress is bad for the animal and can be frustrating for the owner. Try relieving some of your furry friend's stress and bring back the happiness to your household.

Instructions

    • 1

Exercise your dog frequently. Running and playing excites dogs and help lower their stress levels.

    • 2

Feed your dog before you leave it for extended periods of time. Dogs that are hungry while alone worry about not being fed and can become stressed. A full stomach can help keep your dog calm and happy while you are away.

    • 3

Provide toys for your dog. Toys give it a way to play when there are no people to interact with.

    • 4

Turn on a television or radio. The noise and images keep the dog company and stimulated while preventing it from worrying and becoming bored.

    • 5

Consider adopting another dog. Dogs are pack animals and enjoy being together.

    • 6

Spend time petting your dog and praising it. Human touch can alleviate stress in a dog. Petting a dog can destress the human as well.
