Does Comfy Cone Work Well for Dogs?

Dogs will try to clean their own wounds or pull out foreign objects such as sutures from their bodies. It may be necessary to place a cone around their heads when they are wounded or recovering from an operation to keep them from messing with the affected area. Comfy Cones serve a similar purpose as traditional plastic cones and can work well with dogs during their healing period.
  1. Purpose

    • Comfy Cones are designed to keep dogs from licking, chewing, or tearing at wounds, surgical incisions or sutures. They are worn around the neck and head and block access to other areas on the dog's body from the face. They are intended to be more comfortable and maneuverable than traditional cones.

    Features

    • Comfy Cones are made of nylon fabric and foam padding. They include elastic loops where the dog's collar can be threaded through to create a solid support base and Velcro fasteners to secure the shape. They fold up for storage purposes when not being worn, and can also fold partially back from the face when in use if needed. They are also water-resistant as well washable, so can be worn inside or outside the house and cleaned if they get too dirty.

    Sizes

    • The extra small Comfy Cones fit a 6.5 to 8.5-inch neck, such as on a small breed like the Chihuahua. The small size fits an 8- to 10-inch neck, like on a Maltese, while the medium fits a 12- to 15-inch neck, such as on Pugs or Beagles. Comfy Cones also come in large, which fits a 14- to 22-inch neck (Bulldogs, Boxers), an extra large fits a 21- to 25-inch neck (Golden Retriever, Great Danes), and an extra large size fits a 20- to 27-inch neck (St. Bernard, Newfoundland).

    Traditional Cones

    • Traditional cones sold in stores or through the vet's office are made of tough plastic that can form into a cone shape but not bend much beyond that. Though they come in a variety of sizes, they do not have many of the features of a Comfy cone. They hinder movement through doorways and underneath things such as furniture or porches. They also do not collapse at all when the dog lies down so they make sleeping and eating difficult.
