Determine the cause of the dog's hair loss. If the Pomeranian is a puppy between the ages of 4 and 8 months, extreme hair loss is completely normal. Puppies at this age go through a stage called puppy uglies, where they lose their puppy fur and grow their adult coat. Puppies in this stage can appear almost bald, but the coat will grow back naturally within a few months.
Take a pomeranian not in this life stage to the veterinarian to try to determine the cause of the hair loss. Pomeranians are susceptible to developing a condition know as Alopecia X, which results in baldness. The veterinarian will most likely run blood tests and process urine samples to determine whether or not the dog has developed this condition.
Spay or neuter the dog. The condition develops frequently in unaltered dogs and has been linked to a hormonal imbalance. Neutering or spaying the dog can help restore a healthy hormonal balance and allow the coat to regrow itself.
Administer melatonin. The supplement is often used in people as a sleep aide, but it has also been shown to help Pomeranians that have Alopecia X, which can be any one of a number of conditions that involve lack of hair. Melatonin doesn't work with all dogs, and it may not help to cure a reoccurring condition.
Determine whether or not the hair loss is related to another skin condition. Pomeranians are susceptible to dry skin and skin irritations, which could result in hair loss. Keep an eye on the dog to see if he is scratching a lot. If he is, switch to a dry shampoo, prevent the dog from getting wet and groom regularly to stimulate the oil glands of the skin.
How to Get a Pomeranian's Hair to Grow Back
The Pomeranian is a small, fluffy dog prized for its long hair. These dogs can also be susceptible to losing their fur, which can present first-time owners with a bit of a surprise. This hair loss is a natural process at some times, and at other times it can require some special care to get the fur to grow back full and healthy. Determining the cause of the fur loss is the first step in finding a solution.
