Dosing Suggestions for Tylosin in Dogs

When a pet falls ill, it should be examined and treated at the first symptoms. Certain anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and infection-fighting medications, such as Tylosin, can be given to your pet to restore health, but this type of treatment must be prescribed by a veterinarian. The correct dosage and frequency should be given for best results.
  1. What is Tylosin

    • Tylosin is a powder given to dogs as a medication. It is used as an antibiotic to treat infections, an anti-inflammatory to treat colitis and also to fight skin and respiratory tract infections. This is a medication that you will need to visit a veterinarian for, as it is only available by prescription.

    Medication Category

    • Tylosin is part of the antibiotic category macrolide. Erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin and spiramycin are also part of this medication category. This medication inhibits the protein synthesis of bacteria and fights against certain microorganisms.

    Dose

    • The recommended dose of Tylosin for dogs is 5 to 10 milligrams per pound of the animal's weight. The dosage amount should be given twice a day, or as recommended by your veterinarian. The typical duration for giving this medication is six weeks. As is typical with other antibiotics, you should always administer the medication properly through the entire duration to completion, otherwise it may not get rid to the problem completely.

    Considerations

    • This medication doesn't have a pleasant flavor and your dog may resist ingesting it. Your dog may experience diarrhea if the medicine is given orally or pain and itching if it is used as a topical medication for skin issues. Dogs that are sensitive to macrolide antibiotics should not take this medication. Discuss any other medications that your dog is taking with your vet before giving Tylosin to your animal, as it may interact with certain medications.
