Exercise
-
Exercise is a basic benefit that comes from walking your dog. Dogs build up energy that they will expend in one way or another. Their energy level might be high or low, depending on the dog or the breed, but all dogs need exercise. If you do not provide an outlet for the energy through a walk or run, many dogs will find their own way to get rid of the energy. They can become overly hyper inside your home or even destructive and aggressive. Walking your dog also gives you exercise, helping to keep you healthy and in shape.
Bonding
-
Walking your dog regularly can serve as a bonding experience for you and your pet. Your dog will see you as the pack leader and will respect your authority. Having a bond with your dog is important because it can help you to control the dog and have a close relationship.
Training
-
Use your walk as a time to train the dog. The dog should remain controlled and by your side, rather than in front of you and pulling on the leash. After the walk, your dog's energy will be drained. This will make it much easier to train him to follow other commands.
Socialization
-
Your dog will encounter many things during the walk, such as other dogs, people and noises he may not have heard in the past. These interactions will make the dog more confident and increase his social skills. Dogs that never get to interact with the rest of the world often become shy and fearful. Walking also helps him become comfortable when he hears loud trucks, motorcycles, trains and other noises.

Benefits of Walking Dogs
While many people enjoy having dogs as pets, they often do not walk their dogs every day. You might think that your dog can get adequate exercise simply playing in your backyard, but that is not always true. Dogs benefit from a daily walk in many ways and walking your dog can be beneficial to you, as well.
