What Are the Causes of a Canine's Wheezing & Choking?

Dogs are members of the family, and it's rough when they suffer health problems. Learning to correctly identify and treat wheezing, coughing and gagging in canines is essential.
  1. Wheezing

    • Dogs can suffer from allergies.

Wheezing, a high-pitched whistling sound, occurs when air is forced through constricted breathing tubes. Brachycephalic, or short-nosed, dogs such as bulldogs are especially susceptible to wheezing. One of the most common causes of wheezing in dogs is shortness of breath caused by obesity. Wheezing also can be attributed to anything from allergies or inhaled foreign objects to infectious diseases such as kennel cough. The experts at "The Daily Puppy" warn that, since dogs are less capable of regulating their body heat, wheezing can be a symptom of heat stroke.

    Coughing

    • Coughing can be minor or serious.

Recognizing whether the cough is dry and hacking, moist and bubbly, gagging and wheezing or harsh is essential in determining the cause of the coughing. Coughing can be attributed to something as minor as an irritant in the throat or more serious complications such as tumors, diseases such as distemper, heartworm or other disorders. Sometimes, the dog's cough is self-perpetuating because the coughing continues to irritate the throat as it dries out.

    Gagging or Choking

    • Too-tight collars can cause choking.

Gagging is characterized by actions and sounds as if the dog is trying to vomit. While some gagging in canines is normal, there can be other causes. A collar that is too tight can cause these symptoms, but other more serious causes such as an obstructed airway or respiratory disease can be the culprit.

    Seek Medical Attention

    • When in doubt, consult a vet.

Wheezing and coughing that is not accompanied by symptoms of other illnesses is not considered critical. However, make an appointment with your vet during office hours if the symptoms persist. If other symptoms present with the wheezing or coughing, contact your vet or an emergency clinic for advice. If your dog is gagging or choking, small items might be present in the throat. If these can be safely removed, remove them. It is possible and might be necessary to perform the Heimlich maneuver on your dog.
