What Is Good for a Dog Collar Rash?

A dog's skin and coat can be an indicator of his overall health -- and a rash can be caused by many different things. If a dog develops a rash from wearing a collar, it could be because it's too tight or the dog may be allergic to the material. While the rash heals, use a harness in place of the collar.
  1. Coconut Oil

    • If the skin is dry and scaly, massage coconut oil onto the area and let it sink in for 4 to 6 hours; then wash the area with baby shampoo to remove the excess oil. It can be applied once a week until the rash clears up and this should alleviate any itching and help to heal the dry skin.

    Aloe Vera

    • Aloe vera has long been a remedy for cuts, burns, rashes and other wounds. It reduces itching, and also eases the effects of bug bites. The healing properties in aloe vera interact with cells that repair damaged tissues and speed up the healing process. Apply some aloe vera gel to the rash daily until it heals. You can purchase aloe vera gel in stores and you can also apply it directly from the plant.

    Milk of Magnesia

    • Milk of magnesia is another remedy for dry, itchy skin. Put some on a cotton ball and apply it to the rash two times a day. Baking soda mixed with water is another way to offer some quick relief from itching.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple cider vinegar can be helpful in the skin folds around the neck, especially if elephant skin has started to develop from yeast or fungus. Apply it to the area 2 to 3 times per week with a washcloth. Leave the collar off your dog while the rash heals, and if it does not clear up, take him to the vet.
