What to Do if Your Dog Swallowed Something

Dogs are extremely curious and persistent animals. They can occasionally get into unwanted places and eat things they are not supposed to eat. If your dog swallows something you fear may harm him, there are a few steps you can take to ensure that he does not get sick or cause other serious harm to himself.
  1. Call Your Veterinarian Immediately

    • Before taking any action on your own, call your veterinarian immediately. She will be able to tell you, based on your knowledge of what the dog swallowed and the symptoms he is exhibiting, whether you should bring your dog in for further inspection or not. Attempting to remedy your dog's aliment without consulting a trained animal doctor could result in further harm to your pet.

Figure Out What Your Dog Ate

    • Ascertain what your dog ate and how much of it, if possible. There are many things a dog can eat that are inedible, and not all them would be fatal. If you can figure out what, and how much of it, your dog has eaten, it will better assist the veterinarian when you describe what has happened.

    Symptoms

    • Note the symptoms, if any, your dog may be exhibiting. This can also help the veterinarian diagnose what your dog may have eaten and what to do next. If your dog has vomited at all, examine the contents of it and report it to the vet as well.

    Follow The Vet's Instructions Exactly

    • Your veterinarian may tell you to bring your dog to an emergency animal hospital immediately, or she may give you a remedy which you can administer at home. It is important that you follow her instructions exactly, even if they sound strange. Be sure to follow up with the doctor at her recommended intervals, and be sure to ask what to do if the symptoms continue.
