Pomeranian Description
-
Pomeranians are a toy breed of dog with wedge-shaped heads proportionate to their bodies. They weigh between 3 lbs. and 7 lbs. and grow between 7 inches and 12 inches in height. These dogs come in a variety of colors including orange, cream, white, orange sable, black, and black and tan. Nose color varies according to the dog's color. Hair is a thick double coat, and ears are small and erect set high on the head. Known as docile, affectionate dogs, Pomeranians are often used as show dogs due to their manageable temperament.
Reasons for Itching
-
Itching skin on your Pomeranian is generally indicative of one of two possible allergies: either internal or external. External allergies are from any number of things including allergies to pollen, flea saliva, dust mites, dust and dog shampoo. Internal allergies include those from food and occasionally a reaction to medication. External allergies are recognizable by your dog's itching and scratching, while internal allergies result in coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, sneezing and mucus discharge from the nose.
Topical Remedies
-
Topical home remedies for itching in Pomeranians include applying ice packs to affected areas or giving your dog a cool/cold water bath. Pat your dog dry after the bath as opposed to rubbing or blow drying its hair, which can dry out the skin. Other options include aloe vera gel or pulp applied to affected areas, which soothes itchy skin and helps promote healing. Spraying witch hazel on the dog's skin is another option, or try bathing your dog with medicated shampoo in cool water.
Internal Remedies &Additional Ideas
-
Internal remedies for Pomeranians with itchy coats include veterinarian-prescribed antihistamines, as some antihistamines used for humans, such as clemastine fumarate, chlorpheniramine and hydroxyzine, work on dogs as well. Use antihistamines only as prescribed by your veterinarian as opposed to administering a dose by yourself. Other internal treatments include fatty acid supplements such as fish oil, which can improve skin problems over time. Other remedies for helping your Pomeranian cope with itchy skin is to take the dog's mind off the problem by taking it for a walk or playing with it. Treats that require a lot of chewing are also an option.
