Why Does My Dog Develop a Seasonal Allergy to Her Year-Round Cedar Bedding?

Dogs can suffer from two types of allergies: contact allergies and inhaled allergies. Seasonal allergies are those that come when pollen counts are high and disappear when pollen counts are low. When dogs are exposed to the source of allergy during peak seasons it can create symptoms that may not be active when pollen counts are too low to result in an allergic reaction.
  1. Cedar Bedding

    • Cedar produces oils and scents that are too heavy for some pets to tolerate.

At one time, cedar bedding was the only option for pet owners who wanted to organically control fleas and ticks. However, studies cited by Nicole Royer writing for the American Rat &Mouse Association website show a correlation between cedar pet bedding and diseases such as respiratory disorders, liver problems and allergies. Seasonal allergies are more symptomatic in warm temperatures, and when the atmosphere of the house is warm, it allows the phenols to be released from the cedar. Once the phenols are released the dog responds with an allergic reaction.

    Bedding Options

    • Reducing the number of indoor plants can reduce indoor pollen counts as well. (See References 3)

According to veterinarians at the Pet Education website, dog allergies can become more severe with each season if not effectively treated. Changing the bedding to one that does not create an allergic reaction is ideal. Aspen bedding does not produce the phenols and oils that cedar does, which is the toxin that also keeps out pests. While aspen is not associated with respiratory illnesses or atopy (inhalant allergy), another form of pest control may be necessary.

    Treatment and Prevention

    • Therapy baths can be given up to twice a week to help sooth irritated skin.

Itchy skin can result in severe skin lesions and hair loss if left untreated. For immediate relief, stop using scented shampoos and start providing therapy baths using oatmeal dog shampoos to soothe itchy skin. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish sources are effective in soothing irritated skin and producing a healthy coat. Using humidifiers and air purifiers throughout the year and closing off the house and using air conditioner units when pollen counts are high, will also reduce pollen counts and symptoms.

    Considerations

    • While medications are available for relieving allergic reactions, they are generally suggested as a last resort and administered only under a veterinarian's guidance. Known effective medications include antihistamines and corticosteroids. Most veterinarians use medication only after all other treatments prove ineffective. However, in cases where allergies cannot be controlled and produce severe allergic reactions, medication improves the quality of life for dogs with chronic allergies.
