Home Remedies to Get Rid of Bloating in a Puppy

Puppies are the toddlers of the dog world. Just like their human counterparts, they will find things that get them into trouble. An untrained puppy will eat anything she encounters. When she eats something she shouldn't, bloating from a roundworm infection or constipation occurs. Treating these conditions at home involves some extra care with the dog's food; if these remedies fail, take the puppy to the vet.
  1. Diatomaceous Earth

    • Diatomaceous Earth, or DE, is a natural supplement that helps defeat roundworms naturally in puppies. One teaspoon added to each meal will help remove the worms and reduce the puppy's bloating. The DE, which is the fossilized remains of plankton, will cut through the worm bodies and dehydrate them, causing them to die. It must have no additives to be fully effective, so buy a natural DE product rather than a factory-produced version.

Vitamin A Supplements, Garlic and Oat Bran

    • Feed the puppy food enhanced with Vitamin A, or give her Vitamin A supplements. This treatment will fight roundworm. Garlic cloves, ground or chopped and mixed with food, will expel roundworms and reduce bloating. Use only two cloves of garlic once a day, as garlic is toxic for puppies in large doses. Two teaspoons of oat bran added to each meal will also fight roundworms and reduce bloating.

    Psyllium

    • Psyllium is a food additive that helps fight constipation in puppies, which will cause bloating. The additive needs to be accompanied with plenty of water, so make sure the puppy drinks often. The puppy receives the additive twice a day and the constipation begins to loosen, reducing bloating. Psyllium is also found in mineral water, so if the puppy refuses to eat, it can drink mineral water to try to relieve the bloating.

    Dog Food

    • If the puppy has been eating table scraps, stop this practice immediately. Certain human foods, such as rice, dairy or sugar, cause constipation and bloating in all dogs. Feed the puppy moistened dog food to help move the blockage along the digestive tract and reduce the bloating. The puppy food does not need to be fed wet dog food; moisten dry food with plenty of water before feeding it to the puppy.
