Natrual Fly Repellent

Create your own natural fly repellent with household items that are easily available. Mix two cups vinegar, one cup Avon Skin-So-Soft, a cup of water, one tablespoon eucalyptus oil and a tablespoon of citronella oil. Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray your dog's coat. Flies will be repelled by the the scent and should stay away from your dog. You can also apply Skin-So-Soft directly to your dog's coat to repel flies.
Flies will also avoid the scent of garlic. Liquid garlic is available at health food stores and can be applied directly to your dog's coat. Or include fresh garlic cloves in your dog's diet. The scent emitted will repel flies as well.
Coat Your Dog's Ears

You can coat your dog's ears with a variety of oil-based creams or lotions to keep the flies away. Apply products such as Vasoline, diaper rash cream or Vick's Vapor Rub directly to your dog's ears to create a barrier from the flies. Apply antibiotic ointment to any received fly bites to aid in the healing and prevent other flies from biting.
Clean the Area

Cleanliness is of the utmost importance if your dog is housed in an outside kennel. Clear the area near your dog's kennel, house and outdoor run area of any items that may attract flies. Remove dog waste, standing water, straw, trash and debris. In doing so, you can help minimize the presence of the flies.
Keep Your Dog Inside

If at all possible, keep your dog inside during hot, humid summer days. Flies are most abundant during the daytime hours. Take your dog outside during the evening hours to minimize the chances of his being bothered by flies. Avoid areas near lakes and fields when walking or running your dog.
