How to Care for a Minor Cut on a Dog's Toe

While a dog's paw pad is tough enough to stand up to all of the dog's motions throughout the day, it is still possible for a sharp object to tear the dog's toe. If the wound is minor and does not bleed excessively, it is possible to take care of a cut on a dog's toe on your own. The priorities are keeping the cut clean and covered while it has time to heal.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the cut and clear out any debris that might be caught in the cut. Debris near the cut prevents it from healing.

    • 2

Clean the dog's wound by soaking a gauze pad with povidone iodine and wiping the wound clean.

    • 3

Cover the wound with another gauze pad.

    • 4

Wrap a bandage around the dog's paw, holding the gauze pad to the injured area.

    • 5

Secure the bandage with first aid tape.

    • 6

Place an Elizabethan collar around the dog's neck to prevent it from worrying at the collar.

    • 7

Change the bandage every two days or simply remove it when the cut is healed. A minor cut should only take three or four days to heal completely.
