Will Metamucil Work for Diarrhea in Dogs?

The drug Metamucil contains fiber and works as a laxative, making it easier for humans to pass stool. However, human drugs can also cure the ills of various animals. Dog owners should always verify any diarrhea remedies with a veterinarian before administering treatment. Monitor your animal for symptoms. If diarrhea persists for several days or the animal's stool is bloody, take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.

  1. Metamucil and Diarrhea

While constipated dogs may benefit from Metamucil, dogs suffering from diarrhea will not benefit. Mix 1 to 3 tsp. of Metamucil into your dog's food every 12 to 24 hours if it is suffering from constipation. Stop use immediately if your dog's symptoms worsen or vomiting occurs.

    Treating Acute Diarrhea

    • If your dog has eaten dairy products or its diet has changed suddenly, diarrhea may result. Allow the dog to fast for a day. If its symptoms improve, provide it with a bland diet of low-fat meat, rice, oatmeal or cottage cheese for a few days, halving its usual daily portions. Keep plenty of water on hand to prevent dehydration. If diarrhea persists for more than a few days, take your pet to the veterinarian.

    Treating Chronic Diarrhea

    • If your dog becomes lethargic, its stools appear abnormal, and it is dropping weight, chronic diarrhea may be the culprit. Several underlying illnesses may be responsible for chronic diarrhea in dogs, including irritable bowel syndrome or food allergies. Feed your pet a bland diet of meat and grains and provide plenty of water. Allow the dog plenty of opportunity to rest. Take it to a veterinarian for analysis if diarrhea persists for more than two days. Treating the underlying cause may relieve or stop chronic diarrhea completely.

    Medications for Diarrhea

    • Diarrhea can lead to dehydration and the loss of important vitamins and minerals. Leaving diarrhea untreated for a prolonged period of time can lead to malnutrition in your dog. Pedialyte, an over-the-counter formula given to infants to soothe dehydration, can also be given to dogs. Probiotic medication can also relieve symptoms of diarrhea and dehydration. Speak to your veterinarian about medications for diarrhea, correct dosage and times to administer the medication.
