Flea Removal With Foggers

If you have pets, you may have had the unfortunate experience of fleas in your home. In some case, you can treat them quickly with flea collars or special shampoos. In other cases, however, you discover the fleas too late and be dealing with an infestation. Before you call a professional, you should consider flea removal with a fogger first.
  1. Preparation

    • Home flea foggers use toxic chemicals, so it is important to take some safety precautions prior to using one. Make plans for your pets and children to be out of the home for at least the day, but preferably a few days. Remove all food, cooking and eating utensils from the kitchen or place them in closed cabinets. All open food packages should be removed from the home or kept in the refrigerator. All doors and windows need to be shut tightly. Turn heating and cooling systems off.

    Fogging

    • Read the package direction for your fogger prior to using it to familiarize yourself with the instructions for use, as well as any specific safety precautions. Place a small table or chair in the center of a room and cover it with several layers of newspapers to protect the finish. Shake the fogger well. Press or lift the tab of the fogger while pointing the can away from you. Place the fogger on the table or chair, and quickly leave the home and shut the door tightly.

    After Fogging

    • Allow the fogger to work for the amount of time recommended on the package instructions. You may then return to the home and begin to ventilate. Upon returning to the home, immediately open all doors and windows to allow the remaining chemical fumes to escape. Turn on all fans to help the ventilation process if necessary. Vacuum or mop the floors. Wash all bedding, rugs and furniture throws.

    Prevention

    • After fogging your home for fleas, it is important that the home is maintained to avoid future flea infestation. Follow the advice of your pet's veterinarian for flea prevention products that can help keep fleas at bay. Keep stray animals out of your yard to prevent the spread of fleas. Check your pets on a regular basis and take action at the first sign of a flea to avoid total home infestation that will need to be treated with flea foggers.
