How to Clean the Ears on a Chinese Shar-Pei

Shar-Peis are compact Chinese dogs characterized by wrinkly skin around the head and shoulders and short, cream, black or red coats. The Shar-Peis ears -- like those of another Chinese breed, the Chow Chow -- are very small, with stenotic canals. For this reason, owners may experience difficulty when attempting to clean Shar-Pei ears. Nevertheless, Shar-Peis require regular ear cleansing to prevent excessive wax buildup and infection.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your pet outside or in the bathroom to prevent making a mess.

    • 2

Lay your dog on its side and fill its ear canal with an ear cleaning solution labeled for use with dogs. Massage the base of the dog's ear to break up debris.

    • 3

Wipe away ear debris with a cotton ball. Do not use cotton swabs, as they can damage the ear canal when inserted too far.

    • 4

Repeat the entire process with the dog's other ear. If your pet has heavy wax buildup, fill the affected ear or ears with a second dose of ear cleaning solution, massage the ear again and wipe away debris with a cotton ball. Do not attempt to remove all ear wax, however, as some wax is beneficial to the ear canal.
