How Can I Polish My Dogs Teeth?

Your dog̵7;s teeth need to be cleaned and polished regularly. Although your veterinarian normally polishes your dog's teeth following a dental exam and a scaling, there are steps you can take at home using toothpaste specially formulated for dogs and a doggie toothbrush or finger cap. The finger cap has small rubber bristles that help to remove stains and debris from the surface of the teeth. Cleaning your dog's teeth at home also helps to prevent tartar and plaque from building up.

Purchase the necessary supplies. Go to your local pet store and buy specialty toothpaste made for dogs and a doggie toothbrush or rubber finger cap. You'll put this cap on the end of your finger to gently clean your dog's teeth.

Command your dog to sit. You might need another person to hold it still the first few times you clean its teeth.

    • 3

Place a small amount of toothpaste on the rubber bristles of the finger cap. Get in a position that will allow you to reach all of of your dog's teeth.

    • 4

Lift your dog̵7;s lip and use a circular motion to brush its teeth. Place your finger at a 45-degree angle and gently wipe away surface stains. Be sure to brush near the gum line and in the back of your dog̵7;s mouth because this is where problems usually start. Add more toothpaste as necessary.
