Instructions
Directions
Soak the paw in lukewarm water and Epson salt, or use a mild soap and warm water. Swish the paw slowly around in the water to remove any loose debris and dirt. Gently pat it dry with a clean cloth.
Apply a topical antiseptic, such as Betadine, to disinfect the injured area. Use a soft cloth to dab the cut, or pour the medicine carefully over the injury. Do not use cotton balls, as the fibers might get into the wound. Allow the antiseptic to dry.
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment directly on the wound with your finger, or apply it on a gauze pad.
Place the gauze pad directly on the cut, and secure it in place by lightly wrapping a soft bandage wrap around the paw in a figure-eight pattern. Do not wrap it too tightly, as this can cut off circulation in the foot, causing discomfort for your dog and slowing the healing process. Fasten the end of the bandage in place with paper or cloth bandaging tape.
Check the dressing often, and change the bandage daily. You may need to change it more often if it becomes soiled or wet. When you change the bandage, apply another layer of ointment on the cut.
Allow your dog to stay inside while healing, if possible. Secure a plastic baggy or sock over the paw and lightly secure it with bandage tape when your dog needs to go outside.
