Things You'll Need
- Chew toys or bones
Instructions
Check your dog's mouth to see if he has an obvious tooth problem that's causing him to drool. Excessive drooling will cause a dog to constantly lick his chops.
Take your dog to a veterinarian for a checkup and mention his compulsion to slap his clops. There may be a medical reason, such as nausea, tooth problems or illness, causing your dog to do this.
Give your dog a chew bone or chew toy once his good health is established by a professional. A healthy dog that's licking his chops excessively is either bored or nervous and has developed a bad habit. A large toy filled with peanut butter or a rawhide should keep him busy for a long time.
Distract him whenever you see him slapping his chops. This will take some patience, but whenever you see him start his habit, say his name quickly and loud. This will startle him, then you can offer him another chewy treat or interesting toy.
Walk your dog long and often. He may have developed his bad habit out of boredom and simply needs to be exercised more often. A tired dog is a happy, well-adjusted dog that will sleep better.
Search for any clues that may indicate your dog is nervous about something. If there is anyone new in the family or anything frightening, he may have developed this habit as a coping mechanism. See if he does it in certain situations and change the situation for his benefit, if possible.
