Flea Collars and Sprays
-
The simplest way to stop flea problems is by making sure they do not get into the house. The most common way for fleas to enter is on pets, especially cats and dogs that are outdoors regularly. Using flea sprays and fitting them with a flea collar stops fleas from biting your pet and subsequently biting people.
Shampoos and Combs
-
Wash your pet using an anti-flea shampoo if they are obviously carrying fleas. Many pet shampoos now contain flea repellent. Flea combs should also be used when washing your pet to get rid of insects and eggs in their fur.
Cleanliness
-
Make sure the house and your pet's bedding are clean. Fleas, along with other parasites, prefer dirty conditions. Vacuum the house at least twice a week paying special attention to areas where pets sleep. Regular changing of pets and people bedding will also help curb the problems.
Oils
-
Adding certain scents around the home or to pet's bedding can also help eliminate fleas. Lavender, eucalyptus and garlic oils are all good at this. Use the oils mixed with water in an atomizer and spray on furniture and pet bedding.
Insecticides
-
Insecticides in spray form are the most effective way of getting rid of and repelling adult fleas. It is important to remember this will only kill adults and not the eggs. Many people do not like the idea of using insecticides as there are worries about harming their pets. It is best to consult a veterinarian before using this method.
Salt
-
A good alternative flea repellent and suppressor is plain salt. It works by dehydrating the fleas, but with none of the worries regarding poisoning your pet. Sprinkle salt in corners of rooms and on carpets, along with doors used by your pets.

What Repels Fleas?
Fleas are wingless, bloodsucking insects most commonly found on household pets such as dogs and cats. Common effects of flea bites include various skin problems, such as rashes, but can also cause more serious health problems. As they are bloodsuckers they can transmit diseases and are credited with infecting rats with the bubonic plague. Getting rid of fleas is a two stage process of eradication and prevention.
