Health Issues in Black Labrador Retrievers

Black Labrador Retrievers are a popular breed of dog because of their versatility. With their retrieval instincts, they make excellent hunting dogs. Their intelligence makes them well suited for use as guide dogs for the blind. Their laid back, friendly temperament causes them to be an excellent choice as a family pet. Unfortunately, the breed as a whole has a few health problems that they are prone to developing.
  1. Some Black Labradors Are More at Risk than Others

    • One reason that a black Labrador Retriever can have certain health issues is due to irresponsible breeding practices. Responsible breeders should monitor the health of their breeding stock dogs, as well as the health outcomes of their progeny and selectively breed away from health problems as they occur. Due to the increase in popularity of the breed in recent years, less responsible breeders have entered the market who are more interested in making a profit than improving the breed as a whole.

    Hip Dysplasia

    • Hip dysplasia is the best known joint issue that affects black Labrador retrievers. The seriousness of this condition varies and is affected by environmental as well as genetic factors. Sometimes the condition is mild and is only evidenced as small faults in the dog's gait. In worse case scenarios, the dog may lose use of one or both of its back legs. Commonly, surgery will be necessary and pins will be inserted to stabilize the hip joint. There is no cure for hip dysplasia and it is best prevented by only buying puppies from reputable breeders whose breeding stock is hip dysplasia free.

    Eye Issues

    • Cataracts are a common problem for aging dogs. While there is a hereditary factor, it is difficult to predict whether a dog will develop cataracts. Cataracts can be removed with surgery but there is a chance that they will reoccur. Progressive retinal atrophy is a recessive genetic condition that will inevitably result in blindness. If affected, a Labrador Retriever will show signs of sight deterioration at six years of age at the latest. Retinal dysplasia is a condition in which the retina is imperfectly formed. In mild cases, this will have no effect but more severe cases will result in complete blindness. There is no cure or treatment for retinal dysplasia or progressive retinal atrophy.

    Weight Related Health Issues

    • Black Labradors can easily develop obesity if not carefully monitored. They have strong appetites and will often overeat. This has become more of a problem in more recent years, as most Labrador Retrievers lead sedentary lives as house pets rather than the active hunting dogs they were bred to be. Obesity is a serious issue, as it can lead to other health complications and exacerbate mobility and joint issues. This issue can be treated or even prevented by practicing portion control for your Labrador and being diligent in treating your pet to daily exercise.
